Forecast Updated: 4:52am 25/06/2013
Great news for Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass with over 30cm of new snow falling in the resorts yesterday. Most other resorts got some light snow only with Buller and Baw Baw getting the least (if any at all). Light snow today on the higher areas, clearing in VIC during the day.
The 26th should see a high start to move across the country and this will see the cloud move away and we should see mostly fine and sunny conditions from the 27th through to around the 3rd or 4th of July. Not great news as far as natural snow goes but night time temps will be cold enough during this period to make snow.
More snow the first week of July around the 5th-6th is also likely, although probably only light. Following this the 9th-11th looks like we could see some good snowfalls.
SUMMARY: Last Updated: 24th of May @ 05:27:26AM
May usually brings long periods of sunny days due to blocking high pressure systems which cause most cold fronts to slip to the south under the mainland. This pattern looks like continuing for the remainder of May and into June. Once these highs breakdown the likelihood of consistent snowfalls increases as the low pressure systems and cold fronts (that bring snow) reach further north over the mountains. This looks like happening during the second to third week of June and we should start to see consistent snowfalls beginning from then on with cold fronts more likely to reach further north over the mountains.
With the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) reading hovering between -3 and +4 over the last month, and looking to rise slightly we may see mild conditions in the mountains until the blocking highs break down. As per last year I see the lower resorts (like Selwyn,Baw Baw and even Mt Buller) struggling early on to see a full cover as much of the early snow predicted is above 1650-1750m. The resorts will have to rely on snowmaking until we get the first good fall (fingers crossed it's either the end of the second week or third week of June)
Season 2012 was a season of consistent light snowfalls from mid July through to the end of August and considered slightly above average for most resorts. Season 2013 is shaping up to be similar or slightly better than that, just a bit slow at the start.
